About Willetta Calvin

Willetta Calvin is a Certified Trauma Informed Care Practitioner, adoptee, author, healing advocate, and a compassionate community builder dedicated to creating spaces where healing and authentic connection can thrive. Through her own journey of discovery, identity, and healing, Willetta understands the unique complexities adoptees face and is passionate about ensuring no adoptee feels alone. As founder of Adoptee Healing Circle, she creates safe spaces where truths can be shared, voices can be heard, and healing can happen in community. As the author of Somebody’s Child, she brings lived experience, empathy, and authenticity to the adoptee the community. Through Adoptee Healing Circle, Willetta is committed to helping fellow adoptees feel seen, heard, valued, and supported as they navigate identity, truth, and healing.

Adoptee Healing Circle was created from lived experience, compassion, and a deep understanding of the unique emotional journeys adoptees often navigate. Founded by adoptee, author, advocate, and community leader Willetta Calvin, Adoptee Healing Circle exists to provide a safe, supportive, and healing-centered space where adoptees can gather, share their truths, build authentic connections, and find belonging in community.

As an adoptee herself, Willetta understands firsthand the complex emotions that can come with questions of identity, belonging, grief, discovery, and healing. After participating in and later facilitating adoptee support groups, she recognized the life-changing power of being in a space where adoptees could openly share their lived experiences without fear of judgment. That realization inspired the creation of Adoptee Healing Circle—a space rooted in compassion, shared truth, real healing, and authentic connection.

The name Adoptee Healing Circle holds deeply personal meaning for Willetta. She chose the word Circle because it represents coming full circle in her own journey. Once she found her beginning, she knew she could truly begin to grow, heal, and better understand her story. For Willetta, the circle symbolizes wholeness, connection, discovery, and the ongoing healing journey that many adoptees experience. It is a reminder that while the path may begin with questions, it can also lead to understanding, restoration, and community.

What makes Adoptee Healing Circle different is the heart behind the work. This is not a one-size-fits-all approach. It is a community built by someone who has walked the adoptee journey and understands the importance of being seen, heard, valued, and supported. Our approach is rooted in empathy, authenticity, emotional safety, and the belief that healing happens when people are given permission to show up fully as themselves.

Beyond adoptee advocacy, Willetta’s lifelong commitment to service and community leadership strengthens this work. Through her leadership as the Community School Director at Lafayette Elementary School in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, through Bright Side Opportunities Center, she spent years connecting families to resources, building partnerships, and creating supportive environments where people could thrive. That same servant-hearted leadership remains at the heart of Adoptee Healing Circle.

As the author of Somebody’s Child, Willetta continues to use storytelling as a pathway to healing, truth-telling, and connection. Willetta also welcomes opportunities to speak at community events, conferences, workshops, faith-based gatherings, and other spaces where healing conversations are needed. While her story is rooted in adoption, her message reaches far beyond it. She speaks on healing, resilience, identity, purpose, and the truth that life is a journey no one should have to walk alone. Through heartfelt storytelling and authentic connection, Willetta reminds others that healing is possible, community matters, and there is strength in knowing you are not alone.

At Adoptee Healing Circle, we believe every story matters, every voice deserves to be heard, and healing happens in community.

More about Willetta

I discovered that I was adopted later in life, and finding out changed the course of my life in ways I could never have imagined.

Learning that I was adopted was not a gentle conversation or a carefully supported experience. It came in a way that left me with more questions than answers. Questions about my identity, where I came from, who I looked like, and why this truth had been withheld from me. Finding out that such a foundational part of my story had been hidden created feelings of shock, confusion, grief, rejection, and deep emotional pain. It made me question everything I thought I knew about myself and my place in the world.

Like many adoptees, discovering the truth sent me on a journey, not just to find biological family, but to find myself. I began searching for answers through records, support groups, DNA testing, and reunion efforts. Along the way, I experienced both connection and rejection, healing and heartbreak. What I came to understand is that adoption is not a single event; it is a lifelong journey that can impact identity, relationships, belonging, grief, and self-worth.

What I did after finding out was exactly what many adoptees do, I searched. I searched for my truth. I searched for family. I searched for understanding. But ultimately, I realized that while answers are important, healing is essential.

I am uniquely positioned to facilitate adoptee sessions and meetings because I bring both lived experience and professional experience to the space. I am not speaking from theory alone—I am an adoptee who has walked through the complexities of late discovery adoption, reunion, rejection, identity confusion, trauma, and healing.

In addition, I am a Certified Trauma Professional and the founder of Healing Deeply From The Root, where I support individuals in understanding trauma, survival behaviors, identity wounds, and emotional healing.

I also understand the importance of creating spaces where adoptees feel seen, heard, validated, and safe without judgment.

I have been leading support and healing circles for several years, creating brave spaces for honest conversation, emotional support, personal reflection, and community connection. My facilitation style is rooted in empathy, authenticity, trauma awareness, and the understanding that every adoptee’s journey is different.

My groups are important to me because I know what it feels like to carry unanswered questions, silent grief, and complex emotions. My hope is to create a space where adoptees know they do not have to navigate those feelings alone.

"Willeta has been a real asset in our small group of adoptees, courageously sharing her own personal adoption history, a history that would likely be denigrated by those who have not experienced adoption personally. Furthermore, she has helped bring new members into our group by setting up our social media presence.

Why I Serve

My calling to serve is rooted in my own story as an adoptee, and in the sacred responsibility I feel to give back what I have received—compassion, guidance, and the unwavering belief that every story matters. I serve because I know the power of being held in a time of need, of having someone believe in you when you are searching for your place in the world.

Service, to me, is an act of love and faith. It is about showing up with open hands and an open heart, ready to listen, support, and uplift. I am honored to stand alongside individuals and families as they navigate life’s joys and challenges, offering encouragement and connection every step of the way.

Building Stronger Communities Together

True healing and transformation happen when we come together. Through workshops, support circles, partnerships with schools and nonprofits, and community events, I strive to foster environments where healing is possible and every voice is valued.

If you are seeking a partner in creating lasting change, or a compassionate advocate for your organization or community, I would be honored to walk this journey with you. Together, we can build bridges of understanding, cultivate belonging, and nurture the roots of resilience that help us all grow.
